INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of steering column.

1. Install the spring guide (21) to the tilt spring (20).

2. Install the tilt spring with the guide.
A. Spring to the post on the steering column support assembly (57).
B. Secure the spring with locking pliers.
C. With the end of the spring on the post, pull on the center of the spring while pushing the guide end to the post on the steering column tilt head assembly (26).
D. With both ends installed to the post, push the spring into position.
3. Raise or install the steering column to the vehicle.
4. Do steps 1 through 9 under INSTALLATION PROCEDURE in UPPER SHROUD, LOWER SHROUD.
