Inflator Module - Replacement

CAUTION: When performing service on or around the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) components or SIR wiring, follow the procedure to temporarily disable SIR system. Refer to "DISABLING/ENABLING SIR SYSTEM." Failure to follow procedures could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or otherwise unneeded SIR repairs.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Disable SIR System.
2. Insert a flat-bladed screwdriver into one of the four openings in the back of the steering wheel.
3. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to disengage the wire from the slot in the inflator module fastener.
4. Pull the driver inflator module gently away from the steering wheel.
5. Repeat steps one, two, and three for each of the four openings in the back of the steering wheel.

Important: Note the driver inflator wire routing positions, the redundant control wire routing positions and the horn wire routing positions for correct re-assembly.

6. Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and driver inflator module electrical connector.
7. Horn ground lead from threaded hole in the steering wheel.
8. Rotate horn contact lead counterclockwise 1/4 turn.
9. Horn contact lead from steering column cam tower.
10. Driver Inflator Module.

CAUTION: When carrying a live inflator module, make sure the bag opening is pointed away from you. Never carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the side of the module. In case of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag up, away from the surface. This is necessary so that a free space is provided to allow the air bag to expand in the unlikely event of accidental deployment. Otherwise personal injury may result.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Horn ground lead into lower left threaded hole in the steering wheel.
2. Horn contact lead into steering column cam tower.
3. Rotate the horn contact l/4 turn clockwise to lock.
4. Driver inflator module electrical connector and CPA.

Important: Route the driver inflator wires, the redundant control wires, and the horn wires correctly.

5. Align the driver inflator module fasteners to the steering column fastener holes.
6. Push the driver inflator module firmly into the steering column in order that the fasteners engage.
7. Enable the SIR system.
