Sunroof / Moonroof: Description and Operation

Sunroof Control Module Input Terminal Conditions:

The Power Sunroof Control Module determines sunroof motor direction based on inputs received from the Power Sunroof Switch. When the Ignition Switch is in RUN, ACCY or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active, voltage is applied to the Power Sunroof Control Module, enabling Power Sunroof operation. Sunroof motor direction is changed by changing the polarity of the voltage going to the motor. The Power Sunroof Control Module remembers the sunroof position whenever the ignition is shut off.

The sunroof motor (limit switch) input must be closed (shorted contacts) before the sunroof will vent, or slide, open. This limit switch is used to tell the Power Sunroof Control Module that the glass is parallel to the sheet metal.

The Sunroof Switch (4-way metaphoric) provides the control module input selections. Note that the switch only supplies open circuits or grounds to the module. An internal pull-up resistor in the control module, connected to Battery voltage, supplies the voltage at each input when the switch contacts are open. The Sunroof Control Module input terminal conditions for the various switch selections are as follows:

Express Open
The Express Open mode is initiated by moving the Sunroof Switch BACKWARD, applying a ground to the Power Sunroof Control Module SLIDE input (CKT 100). The Control Module applies current to the motor through CKT 127 and CKT 129 while opening. In this mode, the Power Sunroof Motor runs until one of three conditions occurs:
1. The motor stalls at the fully-open position (there is no open limit switch).
2. The Sunroof Switch is moved to the FORWARD (slide close) or UP/DOWN (vent open/close) positions.
3. The Sunroof Switch is released from the BACKWARD (slide open) position and then pressed again.

Closing
Power Sunroof closing is initiated by grounding both the Power Sunroof Control Module (CKT 144) and (CKT 100) inputs by placing the Sunroof Switch in either the DOWN or the FORWARD position. The Control Module applies current of reversed polarity to the motor through CKT 127 and CKT 129 while closing. The glass flush limit switch provides the Power Sunroof Control Module with a flush closed indication.

Vent
The Power Sunroof Vent open position is reached by satisfying two conditions:
1. The sunroof must be in the glass flush position to start (or somewhere between glass flush and full vented).
2. A ground is applied to the Power Sunroof Control Module VENT input (CKT 144) by pushing the Sunroof Switch UP.

Express Close Vent
Sunroof movement to the flush closed position is initiated by satisfying two conditions:
1. The Sunroof must start from the VENT position.
2. Applying a ground to both the Control Module VENT and SLIDE inputs at the same time by placing the Sunroof Switch in either the DOWN or the FORWARD position.

The Power Sunroof Control Module causes the motor to run until the Sunroof Switch is released or the motor assembly glass flush limit switch input closes (CKT 132).
