Engine - Intermittent Stall

File In Section: 6E - Engine Fuel & Emission

Bulletin No.: 87-65-14

Date: April, 1998

Subject:
Intermittent Stall
(Flash PCM with Updated Calibration)

Models:
1998 Buick LeSabre, Park Ave
1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight, Eighty Eight LS, LSS, Regency
1998 Pontiac Bonneville
with 3.8L Engine (VIN K - RPO L36)

Condition

A small number of owners may comment that the engine intermittently stalls during a closed throttle deceleration from about 35 mph (56 km/h). An even smaller number of owners may comment that the engine intermittently hesitates or stalls when accelerating. The engine can be immediately restarted in both situations. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may not illuminate and no Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be stored within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The service technician may not be able to duplicate the condition.

Cause

Calibration within the PCM may not control the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or process Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor information properly during the condition, resulting in an intermittent stall.

Correction

1. If a DTC is present, then diagnose and repair as required before continuing with this bulletin.

2. Flash the PCM with the calibration listed under the Calibration Information in this Bulletin.

Calibration Information

The new Calibrations are available for Techline Tools starting with the 1998 CD 5 release from GM Service Technology Group (STG).

Do not attempt to order the calibration numbers from GMSPO. The calibrations are programmed into the vehicle's PCM via a Techline Tool device.
