Intermediate Steering Shaft
NOTICE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the "LOCK" position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
Tools Required:
^ J-42620 Steering Column Lock Pin
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Insert J-42620 into the steering column access hole to lock the steering column to maintain correct orientation.
2. Pinch bolt at steering gear stub shaft.
3. Left I/P sound insulator.
4. Reposition intermediate shaft seal (dust seal) to gain access to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
5. Pinch bolt, and disconnect intermediate shaft from steering column.
6. Intermediate steering shaft.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Position intermediate steering shaft, inserting fully into pinch bolt pot joint on steering column.
2. Bottom out lower pinch pot joint on steering gear.
^ Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 lb ft).
3. Reposition seal as needed.
4. Left I/P sound insulator.
5. Remove the J-42640 from the steering column.
