REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 35944-A Transmission Oil Cooler Line Flusher.





1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management. Powertrain Management
3. Install the Engine Support Fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
4. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right).
5. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
6. Disconnect the vacuum hose and pipe from the modulator. Refer to Vacuum Modulator Pipe Replacement.
7. Disconnect the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (At PNP Switch).
8. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
9. Remove the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement
10. Remove the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
11. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
12. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
13. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
14. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
15. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement-Engine in Body and Frame.
16. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement.
17. Remove the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering.
18. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering.
19. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame.
20. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
21. Remove the lower ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement.
22. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
23. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.





24. Remove the torque converter bolts.
25. Drain the transaxle fluid.
26. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
27. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
28. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
29. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Jumper Harness Replacement (Left Front) in ABS.
30. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
31. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle and frame.
32. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.





33. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
34. Remove the frame to body bolts.
35. Lower the transaxle and frame from the vehicle.
36. Remove the transaxle from the frame to the bench. Refer to Transaxle Unit Repair.
37. Refer to Transaxle Unit Repair for the inspection procedure and for the overhaul procedure.
38. Use the J 35944-A
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-A
- J 28467-90
- J 36462





1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts.
4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
^ Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
8. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Jumper Harness Replacement (Left Front) in ABS.
9. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
10. Connect the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.





11. Install the torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).

12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
13. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
14. Install the lower ball joints to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement.
15. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right).
16. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame.
17. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering.
18. Install the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering.
19. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement.
20. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement-Engine in Body and Frame.
21. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
22. Install the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
23. Remove the vehicle support.
24. Lower the vehicle.





25. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
^ Tighten the upper transaxle bolts and stud to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

26. Install the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
27. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
28. Connect the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (At PNP Switch).
29. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
30. Connect the vacuum hose and pipe to the modulator. Refer to Vacuum Modulator Pipe Replacement.
31. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left).
32. Remove the Engine Support Fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
33. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
34. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
35. Adjust the toe-in, if required. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications (Front).

NOTICE: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.

36. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure.
37. Use the J 35944-A
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing.

38. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
39. Inspect for fluid leaks.
