Troubleshooting Hints

PERFORM BEFORE BEGINNING SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
1. Check all cruise control inhibit criteria (listed below).
2. Check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Refer to Engine Controls.
3. Check that cruise control module linkage is connected and moving freely.
4. Check cruise cable adjustment. Refer to Cruise Control.
5. Check brake switch for proper adjustment/alignment.
6. Make sure that Center High-Mounted Stoplamp (CHMSL) is working.
7. Check for a broken (or partially broken) wire inside of the insulation which could cause system failure but prove GOOD" in a continuity;voltage check. Refer to Troubleshooting Procedures.

Cruise Control Inhibit Criteria
The PCM has the ability to disable cruise control if conditions are detected which would make cruise control operation undesirable. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) inhibits cruise control operation under any of the following conditions:
^ The engine is OFF.
^ The transaxle is in PARK, NEUTRAL. LOW or REVERSE gear.
^ Engine speed is too high.
^ Vehicle speed is too high.
^ Vehicle acceleration or deceleration rate is too high.
^ Antilock brake system/traction control system is active for more than 2 seconds.
If any of these conditions are present, the PCM requests, via CKT 83 (DK ORN), that cruise control disengage. If the cruise status signal CKT 396 (LT BLU/BLK) indicates that cruise control is still engaged when the PCM is inhibiting cruise control operation, DTC P1554 sets. Refer to Engine Controls.
