Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Diagnostic Chart:






Perform the following inspection procedure from the driver's seat:

1. Turn the ignition ON.
Verify proper operation of the seat belt reminder lamp with the belt buckled and unbuckled. Refer to Seat Belt System Operation.
2. Inspect the shoulder belt guide. Verify that the following conditions exist:
^ The guide swivels freely
^ The seat belt webbing is seated flatly in the guide slot
^ The webbing does not bind

3. Verify that the seat belt buckle faces inboard and is accessible.
4. Verify that the seat belt retractor units are securely attached.
5. Inspect the seat belt anchor bolts in order to verify that they are secure.
6. Fully extend the seat belt webbing. Verify that there are no twists or tears in the webbing.
7. Allow the seat belt webbing to retract. Verify that the webbing returns freely and completely back into the retractor.
8. Snap the seat belt latch plate into the buckle.
9. Tug sharply on the seat belt latch plate and the buckle. Verify that the buckle remains locked. Push the button on the buckle. Verity that the following conditions exist:
^ The seat belt latch plate releases easily from the buckle
^ The button returns to its original position

Repeat the inspection procedure (Step 1 through Step 9) from the front passenger seat. Perform the following inspection procedure for the center belts:

1. Verify that the center belts are accessible and that there are no twists or tears in the webbing.
2. Snap the seat belt latch plate into the buckle.
3. Tug sharply on the seat belt latch plate and buckle. Verify that the buckle remains locked.
4. Push the button on the buckle. Verify that the following conditions exist:
^ The seat belt latch plate releases easily from the buckle
^ The button returns to its original position

Repeat the entire inspection procedure from the rear seats. Refer to Seats in Body and Accessories for information on the removal of the seats or the seat cushions.
