Electronic Description

The variable steer module controls a bi-directional magnetic rotary actuator. The variable steer module is provided battery voltage from the IP Fuse Block HVAC CONT FUSE when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. The variable steer actuator, which is located in the steering gear, adjusts the amount of power steering assist to achieve a given level of driver effort to turn the vehicle. The variable steer module varies the steering assist by adjusting the current flow through the actuator. The amount of steering assist needed for steering is dependent upon vehicle speed, as vehicle speed increases the steering assist decreases, and as vehicle speed decreases the steering assist increases. The variable steer module receives vehicle speed from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If an open or Short is present in CKT 34 (WHT) or CKT 1787 (GRY), the variable steer module will not operate. To monitor the frequency and duty cycle, connect a J39200 to the Data Link Connector (DLC), terminal 11.
