Condition

Some customers may comment on a popping type noise heard in the passenger compartment. This occurs after driving at highway speeds and coming to a stop.

Cause

The source of this noise may be the catalytic converter heat shield. When air flow stops, the heat from the converter may cause the shield to expand.

Correction

Remove (drill out) the rivet from the catalytic converter heat shield. Use the following procedure and part numbers listed below.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the screws and the oxygen sensor wiring rear shield, if applicable.

3. Remove the nuts from the catalytic converter to the exhaust downpipe.

4. Separate the catalytic converter from the exhaust downpipe.

5. Remove the gasket/seal and discard.

6. Locate the rivet above separated flange at the center of the converter heat shield.

7. Drill out the rivet using a 5 mm (3/16 in) or larger drill bit.

8. Install new gasket/seal.

9. Install the catalytic converter to the exhaust downpipe and the nuts.

Tighten

Tighten the nuts to 24 mm (18 lb ft).

10. Install the oxygen sensor wiring rear shield and screws.

11. Lower the vehicle.
