4T65-E Automatic Transaxle

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner cover.
3. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
4. Disconnect shift control cable bracket with cable attached.
5. Remove the top transaxle case bolts.
6. Remove the top bolt from rear transaxle mount.
7. Remove the left side steering rack mount bolts.
8. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
9. Install the J 28467-A engine support fixture.
10. Load the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns to relieve tension on the frame and mounts
11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
12. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheels and Tires.
13. Remove the left splash shield assembly. Refer to Body and Frame.
14. Remove the power steering line bracket from the engine frame.
15. Remove the right splash shield.
16. Remove the left transaxle mount from engine frame.





17. Remove the right transaxle mount from the engine frame.
18. Remove the right steering rack mount bolts from engine frame.
19. Tie off and support steering rack to the exhaust with mechanics wire.
20. Disconnect the transaxle cooler lines from engine frame.
21. Remove the sway bar mounts from lower control arms. Refer to Suspension.
22. Loosen the left and right lower ball joint nuts. Separate the lower ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Suspension. Hand tighten the nuts back on the ball joints.
23. Remove the engine frame bolts.
24. Remove the ball joint nuts and lower the engine frame.
25. Remove the left and right drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.





26. Remove the Torque converter cover.





27. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Mark the flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly.





28. Disconnect Input speed sensor electrical connectors.
29. Remove the engine to transaxle bracket.
30. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube.





31. Rear engine mount.





32. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.





33. Transaxle from vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle.
2. Install the transaxle to engine bolts.
^ Tighten the transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

3. Install the rear engine mount.





4. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube.
^ Tighten the filler tube bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).





5. Install the transaxle brace to engine.
^ Tighten the transaxle brace to engine bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

6. Connect the input speed sensor electrical connectors.

IMPORTANT:
^ Align the mark made on the torque converter with the mark made on the flywheel made in the disassembly.
^ Tighten all the torque converter to flywheel bolts twice.

7. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the torque converter cover.

IMPORTANT:
^ Install the tool J 37292-B Axle Seal Protector before installing the right side drive axle.
^ Use care when installing the right side drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft of the drive axle can easily be damage the seal





9. Install the left drive axle and the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
10. Install the ball joint nuts. Hand tighten the ball joint nuts. Raise the engine frame.
11. Install the engine frame bolts.
^ Tighten the engine frame bolts to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).

12. Tighten the ball joint nuts. Refer to Suspension.
13. Install the sway bar mounts to the lower control arms. Refer to Suspension.
14. Connect the transaxle cooler lines to the engine frame.
15. Install the right steering rack mount bolts to the engine frame.
^ Tighten the steering rack mount bolts to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).

16. Install the right transaxle mount to the engine frame.
17. Install the left transaxle mount to the engine frame.
18. Install the right splash shield.
19. Install the power steering line bracket to the engine frame.
20. Install the left splash shield assembly. Refer to Body and Frame.

IMPORTANT: Torque the wheel nuts to specifications. Refer to Wheels and Tires.

21. Install both of the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheels and Tires.
22. Lower the vehicle.
23. Remove the J 28467-A engine support fixture.
24. Connect to oxygen sensor connector.
25. Install the left side steering rack mount bolts.
^ Tighten the steering rack mount bolts to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).

26. Install the top bolt of the rear transaxle mount.
^ Tighten the rear transaxle bolt to 58 Nm (42 ft. lbs.).

IMPORTANT: Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed.

27. Connect the shift control cable and the shift control cable bracket.
28. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
29. Install the air cleaner cover.
30. Connect the negative battery cable.
31. Check and adjust the transaxle fluid level.
32. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
