Drum Brake System: Adjustments

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 21177-A Brake Drum/Shoe Clearance Gage.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.
3. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange to insure proper balance upon reassembly.





4. Measure the drum Inside Diameter (ID) using the J21177-A.
Turning the star wheel, adjust the shoe and lining diameter to be 0.76 mm (0.030 in) less than the inside drum diameter for each rear wheel.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the drums.
2. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
3. Lower the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Tighten the wheel nuts to specifications.
5. Perform several alternate forward and reverse stops, applying firm force to the brake pedal. Repeat this procedure until ample pedal reserve is built up.
