On-Vehicle Service
REMOVAL
Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Left sound insulator.
2. Upper pinch bolt on steering shaft coupling assembly .
3. Line retainer (if applicable).
4. Master cylinder from brake booster and position aside with the lines attached.
5. Power brake booster away from cowl wall.
6. Brake pedal pushrod from pedal, 1 clip.
7. Remove inner tie rod bolts, lock plates and washers.
8. Left and right mounting clamps.
9. Back of steering gear away from cowl and remove both inlet and outlet pipe/hose assemblies from the steering gear.
10. Move the steering gear assembly forward and remove lower pinch bolt from flange on coupling assembly.
11. Coupling from the steering gear.
12. Dash seal from the steering gear.
13. Steering gear from under hood.
NOTE: If studs were removed with mounting clamps, reinstall studs into front of dash and tighten until the studs are fully seated against the dash panel. The tightening specification should not exceed 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). After second reuse of stud, thread locking kit must be used.
INSTALLATION
Install or connect the following:
1. Steering gear from under hood.
2. Dash seal on steering gear assembly.
3. Move steering gear assembly forward and install coupling on steering gear.
4. Flange and coupling lower pinch bolt.
^ Tighten lower pinch bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
5. Gear inlet and outlet pipe/hose assemblies to steering gear.
^ Tighten power steering lines to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
6. Hand start clamp nuts. Tighten left side clamp nuts to specification first, then tighten right side clamp nuts to specification.
^ Tighten steering gear mounting nuts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
7. Inner tie rods washers and lock plates to Rack and Pinion, torquing bolts to specifications.
^ Tighten inner tie rod bolts 90 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
8. Line retainer (if applicable).
9. Steering column upper pinch bolt.
10. Power brake booster away to cowl wall.
11. Brake pedal pushrod to pedal, 1 clip.
12. Master cylinder from brake booster and position aside with the lines attached.
^ Tighten upper pinch bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
13. Left sound insulator.
14. Fill reservoir with power steering fluid and bleed air from system.
^ Inspect for leaks.
