Valve Spring: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
- J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor
- J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Remove the valve rocker cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement.
3. Remove the spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement (L82) in Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the valve rocker arm. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement.
5. Rotate crankshaft until the piston is at TDC of the compression stroke
6. Install the J 22794 to the spark plug port.
7. Apply compressed air to hold the valves in place.
8. Compress the valve spring. Use the Compressing the Valve Spring or the J 38606.
9. Remove the following items:
- Valve locks
- Valve cap
- Valve spring.
10. Remove the valve stem oil seal.


INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
- J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor





1. Install the valve stem oil seal. Use the plastic sleeve provided. Press the oil seal over the valve guide boss.
2. Assemble the following items:
- Spring seat
- Valvespring
- Valve cap
3. Compress the valve spring. Use the J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor.
4. Install the valve locks. Hold the valve locks in place with grease.
