Front Door Latch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE




1. Remove the trim panel.
2. On the passenger door only, disconnect the temperature control electrical connector.
3. Remove the door trim hanger bracket fasteners and bracket from the door (Oldsmobile front doors only).
4. Remove the water deflector.




5. Drill out the rivets (1) securing the inside remote door handle (2) to the door.
6. Remove the inside remote door handle mounting screw.
7. Disengage the wire harness retaining clip.




8. Disconnect the outside handle to the lock rod. Important: The lock rod clip is very fragile.
9. Disconnect the lock cylinder to lock rod (1).




10. Remove the fasteners from the door lock.
11. Remove the inside handle, rods (2,3) & lock (1) parially from the door.
12. Disconnect the three electrical connectors from the lock.
13. Remove the door latch assembly from the door.




14. Disconnect the rods from the inside remote door handle assembly (2).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Connect the rods to the inside remote door handle assembly (2).




2. Install the door latch assembly to the door.
3. Connect the three electrical connectors to the lock.
4. Install the inside handle, rods (2,3) & lock (1) to the door.
5. Install the three fasteners to the door lock.





IMPORTANT: The lock rod clip is very fragile.

6. Connect the lock rod (1) to the lock cylinder.
7. Connect the outside handle (2) to the lock rod.




8. Connect the wire harness and retaining clip;
9. Install the inside remote door handle mounting screw.
10. Install new peel-type rivets (1), in order to secure the inside door handle (2) to the door.




11. Install the water deflector.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

12. Install the door trim hanger bracket and fasteners.

Tighten
Tighten the front fastener first to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

Tighten
Tighten the rearward fastener last to 3 N.m (27 lb in).

13. Place the door trim panel near the door.
14. Connect the lumbar, seat heater and door lock electrical connectors.
15. On the passenger door, connect the temperature control electrical connector.
16. Install the door trim panel.
