PCM Replacement/Programming

Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or EEPROM programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for PCM Replacement, check the PCM first to see if it is the correct part. If the PCM is faulty, remove it and install the new service PCM.

The new service PCM will not be programmed. You must program the new PCM. DTC P0602 indicates the EEPROM is not programmed or has malfunctioned.

NOTE:
^ In order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge damage to the PCM, do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.
^ Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the PCM connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the PCM (battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal PCM damage.

IMPORTANT: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution In Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Remove the screws from the right hand sound insulator.
3. Disconnect the courtesy lamp from the right sound insulator.
4. Remove the right hand sound insulator.
5. Remove the PCM (2) from the mounting bracket (3).
6. Remove the harness connectors (1) from PCM.
7. Remove the PCM from instrument panel.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Connect the connectors (1) to PCM (2).

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).

2. Install the PCM (2) up into the vehicle mounting bracket (3). Ensure the PCM is fully engaged firmly to the mounting bracket.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.
4. If a replacement PCM is being installed, the replacement PCM must be reprogrammed (flashed) using the latest Techline programming procedures. Testing and Inspection
5. Perform the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure. Testing and Inspection
