Accumulator HVAC: Service and Repair

ACCUMULATOR REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 39500-8 A/C Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling and Recharging (ACR4) System




1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the positive battery cable nut (1) and cable from the underhood fuse block.




4. Disconnect the evaporator hose from the accumulator cover and position out of the way.




5. Remove the accumulator cover.




6. Remove the A/C compressor hose from the accumulator.




7. Remove the evaporator hose from the accumulator.
8. Remove the accumulator from the housing.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 39400-A Electronic Halogen Leak Detector




1. Fill the new accumulator with the proper amount of refrigerant oil. Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution.
2. Install the accumulator into the housing.

IMPORTANT: Inspect the seal washers for damage before reinstalling the A/C lines and hoses.

If any damage is noted during inspection, the suspect seal must be replaced.

Flat washer type seals do not require lubrication.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.




3. Install the evaporator hose and nut to the accumulator.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).




4. Install the A/C compressor hose and nut to the accumulator.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).




5. Install the accumulator cover.




6. Install the evaporator hose into the retainer.




7. Install the positive battery cable and nut (1) to the underhood fuse block.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).

8. Connect the negative battery cable.
9. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
10. Inspect the A/C system for leaks using the J 39400-A. Refer to Leak Testing.
