Removal and Replacement
Removal Procedure1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
3. Depressurize the fuel lines (1). Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
4. Drain the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System
5. Remove the radiator hoses. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement-Inlet in Cooling System.
6. Remove the inlet heater supply hose. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement.
7. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
8. Remove the power steering pump. Set the pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement.
9. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor.
10. Remove the air flow duct.
11. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle linkage.
12. Disconnect the battery wire from the generator.
13. Remove the fuel feed (1) and return lines (2) from the fuel rail and the pressure regulator.
Remove the brake booster hose from the engine vacuum connections.
14. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
16. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the right manifold. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement.
17. Remove the wiring harness connectors from the following locations:
^ The MAT sensor
^ The throttle position sensor
^ The idle air control valve
^ The oxygen sensor
^ The A/C compressor
^ The oil pressure switch
^ The power steering cutout switch
^ The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
^ The low oil level sensor
18. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Tie the compressor back away from the engine.
19. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
20. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
21. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.
22. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
23. Remove the right engine splash shield.
24. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
25. Remove the engine to transmission brackets.
26. Remove the right lower transmission to engine bolts.
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. Remove the generator rear brace. Refer to Generator Replacement.
29. Disconnect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
30. Remove the cruise control stepper motor from the cowl and set aside. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement.
31. Install a floor jack under transmission pan with a block of wood on jack pad to protect transmission pan.
32. Lift jack to support transmission.
33. Install a engine lift chain to the engine lift brackets and attach to an engine lift device.
34. Raise the engine slightly to take weight off the mounts.
35. Remove the engine mount.
36. Remove the engine mount bracket.
37. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
38. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Lower the engine into the compartment.
2. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
3. install the engine mount bracket.
4. Install the cruise control stepper motor to the Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement.
5. to engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
6. Install gerotor rear brace. Refer to Generator.
7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Install the right lower transmission to engine bolt.
9. Install the engine to transmission bracket.
10. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
11. Install the right engine splash shield.
12. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
13. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.
14. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
15. Connect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
16. Install the A/C compressor from the engine. Tie the compressor back away from the engine.
17. Install the wiring harness connectors from the following locations:
^ The MAT sensor
^ The throttle position sensor
^ The idle air control valve
^ The oxygen sensor
^ The A/C compressor
^ The oil pressure switch
^ The power steering cutout switch
^ The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
^ The low oil level sensor
18. Install the right engine splash shield.
19. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the right manifold. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement.
20. Lower the vehicle.
21. Connect the brake booster hose from the engine vacuum connections.
22. Connect the fuel feed (1) and return lines (2) from the fuel rail and the pressure regulator.
23. Connect the battery wire to the generator.
24. Connect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable to the throttle body.
25. Install the air flow duct.
26. Connect the air temperature sensor electrical connection.
27. Install the power steering pump to the engine. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement.
28. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
29. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
30. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement-Inlet in Cooling System.
31. Fill the crankcase with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
32. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
33. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
34. Connect the negative battery cable.
35. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement.
36. Relearn CKP variation. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. Refer to Computers and Control Systems/Crankshaft Position Sensor Service and Repair
