Cylinder Head Replacement



Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the intake manifold lower. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
3. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
4. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left).
5. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left).
6. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover. refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
7. Remove the electronic ignition module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement.
8. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
9. Remove the generator bracket and the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement.
10. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement.
11. Remove the A/C compressor bracket bolt.
12. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.





13. Remove the heat shield.
14. Remove the valve rocker arm assemblies and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Ann and Push Rod Replacement.





15. Remove the cylinder head bolts. Discard the bolts.
16. Remove the cylinder head.





17. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
18. Clean all of the gasket mating surfaces.
19. Inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect.

Installation Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J36660-A Torque Angle Meter
- 7/16-14 tap

Notice: This engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. This design bolt requires a special tightening procedure. Failure to follow the given procedure will cause head gasket failure and possible engine damage.

1. Clean the threads in the block. Using the appropriate tap.

Notice: Installing the head gasket with the arrow pointing to the front will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure. Head gaskets are not interchangeable.





2. Install the head gasket with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.





3. Install the cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





4. Install the new cylinder head bolts.
^ Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Rotate each bolt 120 degrees in sequence. Use the J36660-A.
5. Install the valve rocker arm assemblies and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
6. Apply GM P/N 12345493 approved thread lock compound or equivalent to the valve rocker arm pedestal bolts before assembly.
7. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
8. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
9. Install the left valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left).
10. Install the right valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
11. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left).
12. Install the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
13. Install the A/C compressor bracket bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the generator support bracket to the cylinder head. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement.
15. Install electronic ignition module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement.
16. Connect the spark plug wires.
17. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
18. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement.





19. Install the heat shield.
20. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
21. Connect the negative battery cable.
