Backing Plate: Service and Repair
Removal ProcedureNotice: Do not pry against the splash shield or backing plate in attempt to free the drum. This will bend the splash shield or backing plate. A bent backing plate may cause brake chatter and/or pulsation.
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tires and the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
4. Remove the wheel cylinder (3). Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the backing plate.
6. Remove the rear wheel hub. Refer to Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement-Rear.
7. Remove the backing plate.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the backing plate.
2. Install the rear wheel hub. Refer to Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement-Rear.
3. Install the parking brake cable to the backing plate.
4. Install the wheel cylinder (3). Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
5. Bleed the brake hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
6. Adjust the drum brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
7. Adjust the parking brake.
For the drum brakes, Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment.
8. Install the tires and the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
9. Lower the vehicle.
