Copying A VATS/PASS Ignition Key

Copying A VATS/PASS Ignition Key

TOOLS REQUIRED
- J-35628-A VATS/PASS Interrogator
- J-35628-95 VATS/PASS Interrogator Adapter

IMPORTANT: If the wrong ignition key is used in an attempt to start the vehicle, a Data Trouble Code (DTC) will be set and the Body Control Module (BCM) will not send a fuel enable or starter enable message to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for three minutes even if the correct ignition is used.

To copy an ignition key, it is necessary to first determine which PASS-Key resistor key code is needed. The ignition key being copied must be tested to determine the key code. The ignition key may be tested using the J-35628-A. To use the J-35628-A, turn the tool on, make sure the tool wiring connectors are disconnected and insert the ignition key into the tool lock cylinder. The Key Code Reader will display the resistor key code of the ignition key. Obtain an ignition key blank matching this resistor key code and copy the mechanical cut of the original ignition key to it.
