Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
- J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler and Line Flusher

1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
3. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine.
4. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.
5. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
6. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T Console Shift Control) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T Column Shift Control) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (New Cable Installation).
7. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement
8. Remove the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
9. Remove the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.





10. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3,4,5) and stud (2).
11. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
12. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
13. Remove the front tires and wheels.
14. Remove the engine splash shields.
15. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement.
16. Remove the bolts which retain the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
17. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame.
19. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement in Engine.
20. Remove the lower ball joints from the lower control arms. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement.
21. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
22. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.





23. Remove the torque converter bolts.
24. Drain the transaxle fluid.
25. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
26. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
27. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and the struts.
28. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) or Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Rear) in Brakes and Traction Control.
29. Disconnect the wiring harness connector to the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
30. Use the transaxle table in order to support the transaxle and frame.
31. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.





32. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
33. Remove the frame-to-body bolts.
34. Lower the transaxle and frame from the vehicle.
35. Remove the transaxle from the frame to the bench. Refer to the Transaxle Unit Repair.
36. Refer to Transaxle Unit Repair for the inspection procedure and for the overhaul procedure.
37. Use J 35944-A or equivalent in order to flush the following components whenever you remove the transaxle for overhaul or whenever you replace the torque converter pump or the case. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing:
^ The transaxle oil coolers.
^ The hoses.
^ The pipes.

Installation Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
- J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set

1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
Tighten
Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
8. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) or Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Rear) in Brakes and Traction Control.
9. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
10. Install the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.





11. Install the torque converter bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
14. Install the lower ball joints to the lower control arms. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement.
15. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement in Engine.
16. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame.
17. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Install the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement.
20. Install the engine splash shields.
21. Install the front tires and wheels.
22. Install the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
23. Remove the vehicle support.
24. Lower the vehicle.





25. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3,4,5) and stud (2) and install the wiring harness grounds.
Tighten
Tighten the upper transaxle bolts and stud to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
26. Install the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
27. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
28. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T Console Shift Control) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T Column Shift Control) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (New Cable Installation).
29. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
30. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.
31. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine.
32. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
33. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
34. Adjust the toe-in, if required. Refer to Wheel Alignment.

Notice: Refer to Do Not Overfill Transmission in Service Precautions.

35. Adjust the fluid level.
36. Use 135944-A or equivalent in order to flush the following components whenever you remove the transaxle for overhaul or whenever you replace the torque converter pump or the case. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
37. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
38. Inspect for fluid leaks.
