Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

NOTE: Refer to Cover and Plug Openings Notice in Service Precautions.

IMPORTANT: Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.




1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking.
3. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the fuel filter.
4. Disconnect the threaded fitting at the outlet of the fuel filter.
5. Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.




6. Remove the fuel filter and mounting bracket.
7. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter mounting bracket.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: There is not a service interval for fuel filter replacement. Only replace the fuel filter if the filter is restricted.




1. Remove the protective caps from the new fuel filter.
2. Slide the fuel filter into the fuel filter mounting bracket.
3. Install the fuel filter and mounting bracket.




4. Connect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the fuel filter.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Caution and Notices.

5. Connect the threaded fitting at the outlet of the fuel filter.

Tighten
Use a back-up wrench in order to prevent the fuel filter from turning. Tighten the fuel filter feed pipe fitting to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

6. Install the fuel filter mounting bracket retaining bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the fuel filter mounting bracket bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
9. Inspect the fuel system for leaks by performing the following steps:
9.1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
9.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
9.3. Turn ON the ignition.
9.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
