Static, Whine, or Loud Pop Noise in Speakers When Radio or Ignition is On (Repair and Reroute Instrument Panel Wiring Harness)

Condition
Some customers may comment on a static, whine, or pop noise in the speakers when the radio or ignition is turned on.
Cause
The instrument panel wire harness may be cut or chafed by the steering wheel column bracket.
Correction
Inspect the instrument panel wire harness for cuts or chafing. Repair and reroute instrument panel wire harness, if required.
1. Remove the left (driver's side) knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement - Left in published Service Information.
2. Remove the left (driver's side) closeout/insulator panel. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement - Left in published Service Information.
Important:
The instrument panel wire harness (1) may be cut or chafed by the steering column bracket (2). Refer to the illustration to view the new location of instrument panel wire harness. Production location of the instrument panel wire harness (1) was along the side of the steering column bracket (4). The parking brake (3) is shown for reference.
3. Inspect the instrument panel wire harness for cuts or chafing. Repair the wire harness.
4. Reroute the instrument panel wire harness away from the steering column bracket.
5. Turn the radio on and test the speakers. Ensure that the speakers do not produce a static, whine, or pop noise.
6. Install the left (driver's side) closeout/insulator panel. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement - Left in published Service Information.
7. Install the left (driver's side) knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement - Left in published Service Information.
