Indicator/Warning Message

Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation

Change Engine Oil Soon

The driver information center displays the Change Engine Oil Soon message when the engine control module (ECM) determines that the engine oil life is below 5%. The ECM sends a serial data message to the instrument cluster requesting the Change Engine Oil Soon message. After the oil is changed, reset the engine oil monitor. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting (Service and Repair).

* When the Low Engine Oil Level/Change Engine Oil Soon message displays in the driver information center due to a low engine oil level condition, make sure that the ignition is turned OFF before adding or changing the oil in the vehicle. If ignored it may result in the Low Engine Oil Level/Change Engine Oil Soon message staying ON after the engine attains proper oil level.
* Before replacing the instrument cluster because of the Low Engine Oil Level/Change Engine Oil Soon message staying ON after an oil change or engine oil addition, it is necessary for the engine to undergo a thermodynamic cycle process. The instrument cluster may not be malfunctioning but only needs the Low Engine Oil Level/Change Engine Oil Soon to turn OFF. After the oil is changed, reset the engine oil monitor. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting (Service and Repair).

Engine Oil Low - Add Oil

The driver information center displays Engine Oil Low - Add Oil message when the ECM detects a low engine oil level condition from the engine oil level sensor/switch. The ECM sends a High Speed CAN-Bus message to the body control module (BCM). The BCM then sends a Low Speed CAN-Bus message to the instrument cluster requesting to display the Engine Oil Low - Add Oil message in the driver information center.

Oil Pressure Low - Stop Engine

The driver information center displays the Oil Pressure Low - Stop Engine message when the ECM detects a low engine oil pressure condition from the engine oil pressure sensor/switch. The ECM sends a High Speed CAN-Bus message to BCM. The BCM then sends a Low Speed CAN-Bus message to the instrument cluster requesting to display the Oil Pressure Low - Stop Engine message in the driver information center.

Program Cluster

The driver information center displays a Program Cluster message when the instrument cluster needs to be programmed. The instrument cluster requires programming after a replacement or whenever the message is displayed in the driver information center. The instrument cluster must be programmed and setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Control Module References (Programming and Relearning).

Service Vehicle Soon

The driver information center displays the Service Vehicle Soon indicator when the ECM detects certain malfunctions that are not related to the emissions system or other modules detect malfunctions that require service to the vehicle. The instrument cluster receives serial data messages from various modules requesting the display of Service Vehicle Soon indicator.

Vehicle Overspeed

The driver information center displays a Vehicle Overspeed message when the instrument cluster determines that the vehicle speed is more than 120 km/h (75 MPH) in case the vehicle overspeed function is activated.
