DTC Descriptors
DTC B3883 01
- License Plate Lamp Circuit Short to Battery

DTC B3883 02
- License Plate Lamp Circuit Short to Ground

DTC B3883 04
- License Plate Lamp Circuit Open

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The headlamp switch is supplied with ground at all times. When the headlamp switch is placed in either the park or low beam position, ground is applied through the license plate lamp signal circuit to the body control module (BCM). In response to this signal, the BCM applies battery voltage to the license plate lamp control circuit, illuminating the left and right license plate lamps.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Headlamp switch in park or low beam position

Conditions for Setting the DTC

B3883 01

The BCM detects a short to voltage on the license plate lamp control circuit.

B3883 02

The BCM detects a short to ground on the license plate lamp control circuit.

B3883 04

The BCM detects an open/high resistance on both license plate lamp control circuits or an open/high resistance on both license plate lamp ground circuits or if both license plate bulbs are burned out.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

For B3883 01, both license plate lamps will be continuously illuminated.

For B3883 02 and B3883 04, both license plate lamps will be inoperative.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The DTC will be current for as long as the fault is present.
* When the fault is no longer present, the DTC will be a history DTC.
* A history DTC will clear after 50 ignition cycles.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, observe the E7L license plate lamp-left and E7R license plate lamp-right while commanding the license plate lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The lamps should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the E7L license plate lamp-left
2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the E7R license plate lamp-right
3. Test for less than 30 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
5. Ignition ON, command the license plate lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the selected states.

If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the E7L license plate lamp-left and E7R license plate lamp-right.

Repair Instructions
