Date: March, 2003

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Intermittent Traction Off Lamp Illuminated and DTC C0287 Set (Install Relay)

Models:
2002 Cadillac Escalade
2000-2002 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe
2000-2002 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL
with 2-Wheel Drive and Traction Control (RPO NW7)

Condition

Some customers may comment on the Traction Off lamp being illuminated. This condition may be intermittent and most likely occurs with windshield wiper operation. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC C0287 set.

Correction

Install a relay using the procedure and part numbers listed below.

1. Access the body wiring harness junction block (located above the driver's left foot).

1.1. Remove the cover retaining nut.

1.2. Remove the cover by pushing in the tabs.

1.3. Remove the junction block from the bracket by pressing to release the tabs.

1.4. Remove the junction block in order to gain access to the rear of the block and remove the retaining bolts.

1.5. Separate the wire harness block from the junction block by inserting a screwdriver in between.

2. Access the left-hand IP fuse block.

2.1. Remove the left-hand IP side end panel.

2.2. Remove the IP cluster bezel.

2.3. Remove the driver knee bolster panel.

2.4. From behind the fuse block, remove the retaining bolt.

2.5. Insert a screwdriver between the fuse block and the wire harness block to separate.

3. Remove the brown wire (circuit 441) from cavity E3 of the left-hand IP fuse block. Cut off the original terminal and crimp/solder a new terminal, p/N 12129424, to the wire. Install this terminal into the new mini-relay connector, P/N 12110541, position C1 (this wire feeds the ignition 3 input of the EBCM).

4. Run a new 20-gauge wire with new terminals, P/N 12129424, from cavity E3 of the left-hand IP fuse block to the mini-relay connector, P/N 12110541, position C2 (this provides ignition voltage to turn the relay on and off with the ignition switch).

Important:
If position C4 of the body wiring harness, junction block is already occupied, the new relay circuits referenced in steps 5 and 6 will need to be obtained by splicing into the existing harness wires attached to terminal F (B+) and terminal C (ground).

5. Crimp/solder a new terminal, P/N 12129424, to the wire from cavity F of the new connector pigtail, P/N 15306107. Install this terminal into the mini-relay connector P/N 12110541, position A2 (the new connector pigtail will plug directly into cavity C4 of the body wiring harness junction block and will provide a clean alternative B+ source to the EBCM when the relay is energized).

6. Crimp/solder a new terminal, P/N 12129424, to the wire from cavity C of the new connector pigtail, P/N 15306107. Install this terminal into the mini-relay connector, P/N 12110541, position A1 (the new connector pigtail will plug directly into cavity C4 of the body wiring harness junction block and will provide ground to the control side of the relay).

7. Remove the terminals and wires from cavities A, B, D and E of the new connector pigtail and plug into the body wiring harness junction block at location C4 (upper left corner).

8. Install the relay, P/N 12088567, into the mini-relay connector, P/N 12110541, (C1=30, C2=85, A1=86 and A2=87).

9. Secure the relay and connector to the main IP harness using tie straps.

10. Clear any ABS/Traction control DTCs and perform published diagnostic circuit check to ensure proper operation.
