Bulletin No.: 04-08-57-005

Date: August 31, 2004

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Water Intrusion into Cab at Midgate (Install New Midgate Latch Reinforcement Cross Bar Seal)

Models:
2002-2005 Cadillac Escalade
2002-2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Condition

Some customers may comment that water is entering the cab at the midgate.

Correction

Replace the midgate seal.

1. Fold the rear seat down.

2. Remove the midgate glass.

3. Push down on the button in the center of the cross bar. This will allow the midgate to be lowed without the latch reinforcement cross bar. Refer to the illustration above.

4. Remove the latch reinforcement cross bar from the vehicle. Turn the handle clockwise as seen in the illustration above.

5. Remove the six 10 mm nuts that hold the metal ramp/gutter to the latch reinforcement cross bar.

6. Remove the two rubber plugs from each end of the ramp/gutter.

7. Remove the ramp/gutter.

8. Remove the weatherstrip/seal and clean the latch reinforcement cross bar of any sealant.

9. Install the weatherstrip/seal. When installing the new seal, install the seal at the outboard ends first by fitting the upper and lower carriers on the flange, then work the excess toward the middle. Be certain to hook each outboard metal tab on the crossbar seal.

10. Install the ramp/gutter.

11. Install the two rubber end plugs.

12. Install the six 10 mm nuts that retain the ramp/gutter to the latch reinforcement cross bar.

Tighten

Tighten the 10 mm nuts to 4 N.m (35 lb in).

13. Install the latch reinforcement cross bar.

14. Close the midgate.

15. Install the back glass.

16. Return the seats to the upright position.
