ENGINE COOLING FAN (SPIDER) BRACKET INSPECTION, REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
Inspection and repair
1. Prep and raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the air deflector to gain access to the engine cooling fan (spider) bracket.
3. Inspect the torque load of the lower passenger side engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolt. This bolt also supports the radiator outlet hose bracket.
4. If the residual torque of the bolt is greater than 0.0 Nm:
A. Remove the bolt using a 13 mm socket.
B. Remove the radiator outlet hose bracket and re-flatten the mounting surface of the radiator outlet hose bracket by placing the bracket mounting surface in a vise grip and compressing until flat. Do not crush the stiffening bead on the radiator outlet hose bracket.
C. Insert a new flat washer spacer (p/n 15650962) into the spot face area of the engine cooling fan assembly bracket bolt hole.
D. Install the bolt through the radiator hose bracket, through the new flat washer spacer, through the fan bracket bolt hole and then into the engine block. Ensure that the washer spacer remains positioned in the bracket spot face.
Tighten
Tighten the engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolt to (24 N.m (18 lb-ft).
E. Install the air deflector and fasteners.
F. Lower the vehicle and close the recall.
5. If there is no residual torque on the lower passenger side engine cooling fan bracket bolt (0.0 Nm), go to Engine Cooling Fan Bracket Replacement in order to replace the cooling fan bracket with a new bracket (p/n 12597700). This new bracket will require installing a new radiator outlet hose bracket (p/n 15261734).
Engine Cooling Fan Bracket Replacement
1. Lower the vehicle.
2. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
3. Remove the air cleaner intake duct.
4. Loosen the fan nut from the crank adapter shaft using J 41240-2.
5. Remove the upper engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolt.
6. Raise the vehicle.
7. Disconnect the engine-wiring harness from the frame and reposition the harness.
8. Disconnect the fan from the crank adapter shaft and reposition the fan.
9. Remove the two remaining lower engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolts.
10. Remove and discard the engine cooling fan bracket and radiator outlet hose bracket.
11. Install a new cooling fan bracket (p/n 12597700) and new radiator outlet hose bracket (p/n 15261734). Be sure that the drive pins on the balancer are aligned and seated correctly in the fan hub bushings. Also, ensure that the new radiator hose outlet bracket mounting surface is positioned in the expanded slot area of the new fan bracket bolt hole. A washer spacer is not required for the new cooling fan bracket
12. Install and finger start the lower passenger side bolt, with the new radiator outlet hose bracket, and the lower driver side bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolts to 24 N.m (18 lb-ft).
13. Install the fan to crank adapter shaft and hand tighten.
14. Connect the engine-wiring harness to frame.
15. Install the air deflector and fasteners.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Install the upper engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the engine cooling fan bracket to engine block bolt to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).
18. Tighten and torque the fan nut to crank adapter shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 100 N.m (74 lb-ft).
19. Install the air cleaner duct.
20. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
21. Close the recall.
