Steering Gear Replacement (Left Hand Drive)

Tools Required

J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure




1. Install the J 42640 to the steering column.
2. Remove the front tires and wheels.
3. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner.
4. Remove the front air deflector.
5. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.





Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

6. Remove the lower intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
7. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.




8. Separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.




9. Remove the power steering hoses to power steering gear retaining bolt.




10. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering gear.
11. Disconnect the left brake line from the brake hose.
12. Plug the brake line and position the it to the side.




13. If equipped with AWD, using a suitable jack, support the bottom of the front differential housing.




14. If equipped with AWD, loosen the right engine mount nut.
15. If equipped with AWD, raise the differential housing to clear the steering rack bolt.




16. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
17. Remove the left rearward lower control arm to frame mounting nut and bolt.
18. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
2. Install the left rearward lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

3. Install the power steering gear retaining bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 180 N.m (133 lb ft).

4. If equipped with AWD, lower the differential housing.




5. If equipped with AWD, tighten the right lower engine mount to the frame nut.

Tighten the nut to 80 N.m (59 lb ft).




6. If equipped with AWD, remove the support from the bottom of the differential housing.
7. Install the left brake line to the brake hose.

Tighten the line to 27 N.m (20 lb in).




8. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear.




9. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear retaining bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

10. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckles.
11. Connect the variable effort steering harness connector.
12. Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.




13. Install the lower intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

14. Clean all excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
15. Install the front air deflector.
16. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner.
17. Install the front tire and wheels.




18. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
19. Bleed the power steering system.
20. Bleed the hydraulic brake system.
21. Adjust the front toe.
