Circuit/System Description

The manual shift detent lever with shaft position switch assembly, or internal mode switch (IMS) assembly is a sliding contact switch attached to the manual shift detent lever within the transmission. The 4 inputs to the transmission control module (TCM) from the switch indicate which position is selected by the transmission manual shaft. The input voltage at the TCM is high when the switch is open and low when the switch is closed to ground. The state of each input is displayed on the scan tool as IMS A/B/C/P. The IMS input parameters represented are transmission range signal A, Signal B, signal C, and signal P.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The engine speed is 400 RPM or greater for 5 seconds.
* The ignition voltage is 8.6 volts or greater.
* The engine torque signal is valid.

P1915
* DTC P0722 or P0723 is not set.
* The transmission output shaft speed is 90 RPM or less.
* The ignition voltage is 6.0 volts or greater.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P182E

The IMS does not indicate a valid Park, Reverse, Neutral or Drive Range gear position for 7 seconds.

P1915

The IMS does not indicate Park or Neutral during the following sequence:

* The engine speed is less than 50 RPM for more than 0.25 second.
* The engine speed is 50-480 RPM for more than 0.07 second.
* The engine speed is greater than 525 RPM for more than 3.25 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTCs P182E and P1915 are Type A DTCs.
* The TCM commands maximum line pressure.
* The TCM turns OFF all solenoids.
* The TCM freezes transmission adaptive functions.
* The TCM limits the transmission to reverse and 5th gear.
* The TCM turns OFF the high side driver.
* The TCM inhibits Tap Up/Down function.
* The TCM inhibits manual shifting of forward gears.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P182E and P1915 are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Perform the Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment (Adjustments) procedure to verify proper adjustment.
2. Ignition ON, engine OFF, observe the scan tool IMS A/B/C/P parameter while moving the gear shift lever from Park, to Reverse and through all the ranges. The parameter should match each gear range that is selected. Refer to Transmission Internal Mode Switch Logic (Transmission Internal Mode Switch Logic).
3. Observe the scan tool engine control module (ECM) PNP Switch parameter while moving the gear shift lever from Park, to Reverse and through all the ranges. The parameter should display Park/Neutral in the Park and Neutral positions, and In Gear in all other positions.
4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: You must perform Circuit/System Verification first.

Note: Under certain driving conditions, DTC P182E could set due to an intermittent low voltage fault on the park/neutral signal circuit, before conditions for setting DTC P0851 are met.

1. Ignition OFF, remove the control valve body cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement (Control Valve Body Cover Replacement).
2. Connect the TCM harness connector.
3. Disconnect the IMS connector X2 at the control solenoid valve assembly.
4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool IMS A/B/C/P parameter displays HI for all 4 signal circuits.

If not the specified value, replace the control solenoid valve assembly. Refer to Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).

5. Verify the scan tool ECM PNP Switch parameter displays In Gear.

If not the specified value, test the park/neutral signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.

6. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between each transmission range signal circuit terminal listed below and the IMS ground circuit, terminal A on the TCM assembly. The corresponding scan tool IMS A/B/C/P parameter should display LOW when the terminal is connected to the IMS ground.

* Switch Signal A terminal E
* Switch Signal B terminal D
* Switch Signal C terminal C
* Switch Signal P terminal B

If not the specified value, replace the control solenoid valve assembly.

7. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between park/neutral switch signal circuit terminal F and IMS ground circuit terminal A on the TCM assembly. Verify the ECM PNP Switch parameter changes from IN Gear to Park/Neutral.

If not the specified value, test the park/neutral signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

8. If all circuits test normal, replace the IMS.

Repair Instructions

Note:
* Perform the Service Fast Learn Adapts (Programming and Relearning) following all transmission related repairs.
* Perform the Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Inspection (Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Inspection) before replacing the TCM.

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.

* Manual Shift Detent Lever with Shaft Position Switch Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair)
* Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment (Adjustments)
* Control Module References (Programming and Relearning) for ECM or control solenoid valve assembly replacement, setup, and programming
