Assemble
1. Position input shaft and output shaft on bench, then install two shift forks.2. Install input shaft and output shaft as an assembly into case using care not to damage gears.
3. Place interlock bracket onto guide pin J-28411. Ensure that bracket properly engages shift forks. On 1981-85 models, place a straight edge on both sides of interlock to determine if detent and interlock are out of alignment. The straightedge should rest evenly on both sides of the interlock with no interference from the detent paddle. If there is interference on either side, proceed as follows:
a. Place detent and interlock assembly into a soft-jawed vise and apply light pressure to the detent paddle to push it into alignment.
b. Loosen the nut securing detent spring to interlock. The spring is slotted beneath the nut and will seek a proper alignment.
c. Tighten detent spring to interlock nut.
d. Recheck detent alignment with straightedge.
4. Place detent shift lever into interlock bracket, then install shifter shaft through interlock bracket and detent shift lever. Do not insert shifter shaft any further at this time.
5. Install reverse shift fork onto guide pin. Ensure that reverse shift for engages interlock bracket.
6. Install reverse idler gear and shaft. Ensure that long end of shaft and large chamfered ends of gear teeth are facing upward. Install spacer onto shaft. The flat on the reverse idler gear shaft should face input gear shaft.
7. Install shifter shaft through reverse shift fork, until it contacts the inhibitor spring spacer, then remove dummy shaft. With shaft in the neutral position install lock plate and bolt through detent shift lever. After tightening bolt bend lock tab over bolt head.
8. Install fork shaft through synchronizer forks and into case bore.
9. Carefully install ring gear and differential case assembly, then install magnet.
10. Apply a thin bead of sealant to clutch cover, then carefully install cover onto transaxle case, using dowel pins to guide cover into position. Using a plastic mallet, tap cover to ensure the cover is seated.
11. Install and torque 15 attaching bolts to 16 ft lbs.
12. Shift transaxle through gear ranges and test for freedom of movement of all internal components.
