The cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, bearings and crankshaft must be removed from engine before replacing cylinder liners.
1. If original liners, Fig. 14, are to be reinstalled, mark position of liner in cylinder block and keep piston with original liner for reference during installation.
2. Use tool J-29775 or equivalent to remove liners from cylinder block. Discard O-ring from bottom of cylinder liner.
3. Check cylinder liner and block mating surfaces to ensure they are free of nicks and burrs.
4. If original liners are to be installed into original block, it is not necessary to gauge their height. Install new O-ring seal onto liner, align reference marks made during removal, then install liner into block using tool J-29775 or equivalent.
5. If new liner and piston assembly is to be installed, or if original block experienced overheating, then cylinder liner height must be gauged.
6. Position new liner into block without O-ring.
7. Position gauge J-29776 or equivalent onto cylinder liner. Check to ensure that spring loaded guide pins fit into liner with machined pads resting on edge of liner and dial indicator contacting block deck face. Apply moderate pressure to gauge until dial indicator stops moving.
8. Record this reading. If reading is on + side of dial indicator, cylinder liner is higher than block face by indicated amount. If reading is on - side, cylinder liner is below block face.
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 at two other locations. Take average of three readings as actual liner height.
10. Specified liner height is .01---.08 mm above block deck face. If specified height cannot be obtained, replace liner with new one. Liners may be rotated in block to obtain specified height.

11. If liner height is satisfactory, then liner-to-liner height must be checked. Install adjacent liners into cylinder block without O-ring. Using gauge J-29766 or equivalent, measure height between liners while second liner is held firmly in place, Fig. 15. Liner-to-liner height should be ±.05 mm. Mark liners in this position.
12. When installing liners into block, check to ensure that liners are installed in marked position. Install O-ring onto liner, then install liner into block using tool J-29775 or equivalent.
