Engine Removal and Installation


1982-85 V8-250
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove screws securing strut support rods and position rods aside.
3. Remove radiator shroud to radiator support screws. Remove staples securing upper and lower fan shrouds.
4. Remove radiator cover from radiator support.
5. Remove power steering reservoir from upper fan shroud, then position reservoir aside and remove fan shroud.
6. Mark hood hinge outlines on hood, then remove hood.
7. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
8. Disconnect upper radiator hose from thermostat housing.
9. Disconnect following electrical connectors:
a. Coolant temperature sensor.
b. Engine metal temperature switch.
c. MAT sensor.
d. Idle speed control motor.
e. Throttle position sensor.
f. EGR solenoid.
g. AIR management valve.
h. Oxygen sensor.
i. Ignition timing connector.
j. Distributor and A/C compressor.
k. Alternator, cruise control servo and right side cylinder head ground wires.
10. Disconnect wiring harness support clips and position harness aside.
11. Disconnect brake vacuum hose from pipe, throttle linkage, and vapor canister hose.
12. Remove clutch fan assembly, then disconnect lower radiator hose.
13. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and position compressor aside with all lines attached.
14. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose and remove water nipple from rear of intake manifold.
15. Disconnect fuel inlet and return lines.
16. On Brougham and DeVille models, raise and support vehicle, then proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect oil cooler lines from filter adapter, then remove filter adapter.
b. Remove strut rods connecting engine mounts to flywheel cover.
c. Remove flywheel cover.
d. Remove six engine to transmission screws, then remove motor mount through bolts.
e. Remove screws securing flywheel to converter.
f. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors, then disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold.
g. Lower vehicle to ground, then support transmission with suitable jack.
h. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine lift brackets, then raise engine slowly and position forward to disengage from transmission.
i. Remove engine from vehicle.
j. Reverse procedure to install.
7. On Eldorado and Seville models, raise and support vehicle, then proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect oil cooler lines from junction at righthand side of engine compartment.
b. Remove six engine to transaxle screws, then remove nuts securing engine mount brackets to transmission.
c. Remove flywheel cover and screws securing flywheel to converter.
d. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors, then disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold.
e. Lower vehicle, then support transaxle with suitable jack.
f. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine lift brackets, then raise engine slowly and pull forward to disengage from transmission.
g. Remove engine from vehicle.
h. Reverse procedure to install.
