Direct Clutch Assembly
Inspection1. Remove snap ring, then remove clutch backing plate from direct clutch housing.
2. Remove clutch plates from direct clutch housing and keep them separated from forward clutch plates.
3. Inspect composition-faced plates and steel clutch plates for wear or burning
4. Inspect clutch backing plate for scoring or other damage.
5. Using tools J-23327-1 and J-23456, compress retainer and spring assembly, then remove snap ring and inspect for damage or distortion.
6. Remove tools, then remove retainer and spring assembly from housing.
7. Inspect release spring retainer and release spring for a Collapsed condition.
8. Remove release spring guide and inspect for damage.
9. Remove direct clutch piston, then remove outer and inner seals from piston and discard seals. Do not remove clutch apply-ring unless piston or apply-ring require replacement.
10. Inspect direct clutch piston assembly for distortion, cracks, damage. Inspect check ball for freedom of operation and inspect check ball capsule for damage.
11. Remove center seal from direct clutch housing and discard, then inspect direct clutch housing for cracks and wear. Make sure oil passages are open.
12. Check for free operation of check balls, and inspect check ball capsule for damage.
13. Inspect direct clutch housing snap ring grooves for damage.
14. Inspect direct clutch bushings for damage or scoring.
Assembly & Installation
1. Install clutch apply-ring on piston, then install inner and outer seals on piston with lips facing away from clutch apply-ring side.
2. Install center seal on direct clutch housing with lip facing up, then install seal protector J-2510. Use care when installing direct clutch piston past larger direct clutch snap ring groove, as groove could damage outer seal on piston.
3. Lubricate seals and install direct clutch piston. To aid piston installation, insert fabricated tool, see image, between seal and housing. Rotate tool around housing to compress lip seal, while pushing down slightly on piston.
4. Remove seal protector, then install release spring guide with omitted rib over check ball in piston, see image.
5. Install retainer and spring assembly. Retainer could locate itself in snap ring groove, forcing retainer to compress springs and damaging retainer upon installation.
6. Using tool J-23327-1 and J-23456, compress retainer and spring assembly past snap ring groove. Then install snap ring. A press and J-23327-1 can be use to compress retainer and spring assembly.
7. Remove tools, then lubricate and install direct clutch plates into direct clutch housing, starting with a flat steel and alternating with composition-faced and flat steel clutch plates. Refer to image for "Clutch Plate Usage Chart."
8. Install backing plate with polished side against composition plate, then install snap ring. Make sure composition clutch plates turn freely.
