SUBJECT: DECK LID GAS SUPPORT KIT - PART NUMBER 20578574
MODELS AFFECTED: 1979-1983 ELDORADOS
Gas spring service kits are now available from WDDGM for use on 1979-1983 Cadillac Eldorados only.
Previously used parts will be discontinued. Each kit includes two new supports, a spring assembly with attaching hardware, and complete installation instructions. The entire kit, including the spring, must be used for proper operation.
The deck lid support service kit can be ordered from GMWDD under P/N 20578574. Individual components of the kit can be ordered separately from GMWDD under the following part numbers:

To install the kit, proceed as follows:
1. Prop lid in full-open position.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove or loosen gas support assembly attachments with rear compartment lid in any position other than fully open as personal injury may result.
2. Disengage lid and body side retaining clips from ends of gas support assemblies by using tool J-29144 or equivalent and remove support.
3. Install new supports and attach retaining clips.

4. Locate retainer plate to flat surface of deck lid inner panel 44 mm (1-3/4") to right of center of lock cylinder retainer (Figure 1). Tabs on retainer plate must fit tightly to curvature of lid inner panel.
5. Using properly positioned retainer plate as a guide, center punch and drill a (1/4") hole through lid inner panel to align with hole near center of retainer plate.
6. Apply sealer such as strip caulk around hole and attach retainer plate using one rivet. Drill second (1/4") hole through lid to align with remaining hole in retainer.
7. Install spring assembly under ears on retainer plate and position eye of spring over previously drilled hole. Apply sealer such as strip caulk around hole before installing rivet. Secure spring and retainer plate with rivet.
For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation No. T6109 at .4 hour.
