Final Drive Replace


1982-85 ELDORADO, RIVIERA, SEVILLE & TORONADO

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise front of vehicle and position jack stands under front frame horns.
3. Remove right and left-hand frame brace front attaching bolts, then position braces to provide clearance.
4. Position drain pan under final drive cover, then loosen cover and allow lubricant to drain.
5. Remove final drive cover attaching screws, cover and gasket.
6. Remove screws attaching right and left output shafts to drive axles. Separate output shaft flanges from drive axles to permit clearance of final drive assembly with shafts installed.
7. Remove two screws attaching battery cable retainer to righthand output shaft support, then remove two screws securing support to engine. Rotate support downward to provide clearance for removal.
8. Remove final drive to transmission attaching screws that secures rear of final drive shield, then loosen support bracket screws that secure front of shield and remove shield.
9. Remove five remaining final drive to transmission attaching screws.
10. Remove screws attaching final drive support bracket to engine block.
11. Using tool J-24319, disconnect steering linkage intermediate shaft from pitman and idler arms. Push linkage forward to ensure adequate clearance for final drive assembly removal.
12. Slide final drive assembly forward, off transmission splined shaft and remove unit with output shafts attached. Use care not to damage output shaft seal or splines.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Torque final drive to transaxle attaching bolts to 30 ft. lbs., support bracket bolts to 50 ft. lbs. and output shaft to drive shaft attaching bolts to 60 ft. lbs.
