STARTER NOISE AND BROKEN END HOUSINGS - 1982 DIESEL GEAR REDUCTION STARTERS


Abnormal starter motor cranking noise experienced on diesel gear reduction starters may be due to improper clearance between the flywheel ring gear teeth and the starter drive gear. Improper mesh of the starter drive gear teeth could result in a broken starter drive housing.

To correct this condition:

1. Inspect starter drive housing (P/N 1985970) for cracks. If cracks are evident, drive housing replacement is required and the reduction drive gear and the armature should be inspected for possible damage.

2. Shim the starter as required by adding .015 inch shims (P/N 10008053) until the cranking noise becomes normal. If more than three shims (.045 inch total) are required to obtain the proper ring gear teeth to starter drive mesh, replace the starter drive housing (P/N 1985970) and center bearing support (P/N 1972700).
