Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and raise vehicle.2. Disconnect transmission shift linkage, speedometer cable, downshift connector and the Track Master electrical connector, if equipped.
3. Disconnect and plug oil cooler lines from transmission and position aside. Also, plug transmission ports.
4. Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum modulator and position aside.
5. Remove propeller shaft
6. Remove lower flywheel housing cover and the three converter to flywheel attaching bolts. This is accomplished by inserting a heavy screwdriver in open slot under one of the converter weld nuts and rotating the converter with a 11/4 inch deep socket until the bolts are accessible. Do not pry on ring gear or transmission case to rotate converter as damage may result.
7. Support rear of engine with a suitable jack
8. Remove two rear engine mounts to extension housing screws.
9. Support transmission with a suitable jack and raise transmission slightly, releasing load from rear engine support crossmember, and remove shim.
10. Remove rear engine support crossmember bolts, then the space from crossmember right side.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and remove rear engine support
12. Remove engine to transmission bolts. It may be necessary to slightly lower the engine and transmission to gain access to the upper attaching
bolts.
13. Move transmission rearward, disengaging transmission case from engine locating dowels, and install a suitable converter holding tool.
14. Lower transmission from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install. Note the following:
a. Torque converter to flywheel bolts to 35 ft lbs.
b. Torque engine to extension housing bolts to 55 ft lbs.
c. Torque exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold bolts to 17 ft lbs.
d. Torque support crossmember bolts to 25 ft lbs.
