Roller Clutch & Reaction Carrier
Inspection1. Remove roller clutch race and inspect race and spline for scoring or wear.
2. Remove roller clutch assembly and inspect roller bearings, cage and springs for damage or wear.
3. Remove and inspect reaction carrier to clutch thrust washer for scoring or excessive wear.
4. Inspect the 4-tanged reaction carrier to rear internal gear thrust washer for scoring or distorted tangs.
5. Inspect reaction carrier and roller clutch cam ramps for damage.
6. Inspect bushing for damage or scoring.
7. Inspect planet pinions for damage, rough bearings or tilting.
8. Check pinion endplay, see image. Endplay should be .O09-.027 inch.
Assembly & Installation
1. Install roller clutch to reaction carrier thrust washer.
2. Install rollers by compressing energizing spring and inserting roller from outer edge.
3. Install roller clutch assembly into roller clutch cam, see first image, then install roller clutch race with spline side out and rotate clutch race clockwise into position, see second image.
4. Install the 4-tanged reaction carrier to reaction internal gear thrust washer, see image. Align tangs into slots of reaction carrier and retain with petroleum jelly.
5. Install clutch and reaction carrier assembly into reaction internal gear, see first image, then install tool J-26958 onto output end of case, see second image.
6. Position case cover end up, then install reaction unit parts into case and into tool J-26958, indexing reaction internal gear parking pawl lugs to pass by parking pawl tools.
7. Using adjusting screw on tool J-26958 and observing through parking pawl case slot, adjust height of reaction internal gear parking lugs to align flush with top of parking pawl tooth.
