TRANSMISSION OIL LEAK IN FINAL DRIVE AREA -THM 325-4L
FIGURE 1 - GOVERNOR CUP PLUG LOCATION:
1982 Eldorados and Sevilles equipped with THM 325-4L transmissions may experience a transmission oil leak in the final drive to transmission case mating area and/or an erratic upshift caused by a loose or missing governor cup plug in the transmission case passage (refer to Figure 1).
The cup plug was secured in production with Loctite effective with the listed transmission serial numbers. On the THM 325-4L, the serial number is located on the driver side of the bell housing and uses the following format:
Model Year Model Serial Number (Engine Application)
82 AJ 58856 (HT4100 engine)
82 AL 8327 (Diesel engine)
82 AM 5587 (V-6 engine)
To correct transmissions with this condition, proceed as follows:
1. Remove final drive (refer to 1982 Cadillac Service Information Manual, page 4C-3).
2. Remove original governor cup plug.
3. Install a new governor cup plug (PIN 8620318) using Loctite 290 or equivalent to seal the cup plug to the transmission case. Staking the cup plug into the transmission case will not assure an adequate seal.
4. Install final drive assembly with new gasket (P/N 1620403) (refer to 1982 Cadillac Service Information Manual, page 4C-3).
For warranty purposes, use Operation T6063 at 1.7 hours (V-8) or 2.1 hours (V-6).
