STANDARD COLUMN
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering wheel.
2. Remove lock plate cover.
3. Using tool J-23653 or equivalent, compress lock plate and spring, then remove snap ring from groove in steering shaft, Fig. 6.
4. Remove lock plate, turn signal cancelling cam, upper bearing preload spring and thrust washer from steering shaft. At this point steering shaft is free. Do not slide shaft out of steering column.
5. Remove turn signal lever attaching screw, then signal lever.
6. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, proceed as follows:
a. Attach a long piece of piano wire to cruise control switch harness connector.
b. Pull cruise control harness up through and out of column.
c. Remove piano wire from harness connector. Do not remove wire from column.
7. On all models, remove turn signal switch attaching screws, then slide switch wire connector off bracket.
8. Remove mounting bracket to steering column attaching bolts, then bracket.
9. Disconnect switch connector from wire harness.
10. Wrap a piece of tape around switch connector and harness to facilitate removal, Fig. 7.
11. Pull turn signal straight up with wire protector attached, and remove switch harness and connector from column.
12. Reverse procedure to install.
TILT & TELESCOPE WHEEL
1. Disconnect battery cable.
2. Remove steering wheel and slide rubber sleeve from steering shaft.
3. Remove plastic retainer from C-ring.
4. With a suitable compressor, thread bolt into steering shaft lock hole.
5. Compress preload spring and remove C-ring, Fig. 6.
6. Remove compressor and remove lock plate, horn contact carrier and preload spring.
7. Remove steering column lower cover and the signal lever.
8. On cars equipped with cruise control proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect cruise control wire from harness.
b. Remove harness protector from cruise control.
c. Wrap wire around turn signal lever until lever is disconnected. Do not remove wire from column.
9. On all models remove bolts at upper support.
10. Remove four screws securing upper mounting bracket to column and remove bracket.
11. Disconnect turn signal harness and remove wires from plastic protector. Wrap a piece of tape around connector and harness to facilitate removal, Fig. 7.
12. Remove screw securing turn signal switch to column and pull switch out.
13. Reverse procedure to install.
