200-4R Automatic Transmission

THM 200-4R TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


REMOVAL
1. Open hood, place protectors on both fenders and disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.





3. Disconnect T.V./Detent cable at its upper end.
4. Remove transmission oil dipstick (and bolt holding dipstick tube if accessible).
5. Raise car.
6. Remove propeller shaft. Mark location for original installation.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable at the transmission.
8. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission.
9. Disconnect all electrical leads at the transmission and any clips that retain the leads to the transmission case.
10. Remove flexplate cover and mark flexplate and torque converter to maintain original balance.
11. Remove torque converter to flexplate bolts.
12. Position a transmission jack under transmission and remove rear tub mount (three bolts).
13. Remove floor pan reinforcement.
14. Remove four (4) bolts from crossmember and move out of way.
15. Remove one (1) transmission to engine bolt on the left side that holds ground strap.





16. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines and plug openings. Lower the transmission a minimum amount to gain access to the oil cooler lines and T.V. cable attachments.
17. Disconnect T.V. cable.
18. Support engine with a suitable tool and remove remaining transmission to engine bolts.
19. Disconnect the transmission assembly being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage.
20. Install torque converter holding tool J-21366 and remove the transmission assembly from the car.

INSTALLATION
To install, reverse the removal procedure and include the following:
- Before installing the flexplate to converter bolts, make certain that the weld nuts on the converter are flush with the flexplate and the converter rotates freely by hand in this position. Also make sure flexplate and torque converter marks line-up for proper balance. Hand start the three bolts and tighten finger tight, then torque to specifications. This will ensure proper converter alignment. Install new oil seal on oil filler tube before installing tube (if removed).
- Torque all fasteners to specifications.





- Adjust shift linkage.





- Adjust cable.
- Refill transmission with fluid.
