Air Injection: Testing and Inspection
Do not use this procedure if any of the following codes are stored in the memory: 23, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 44, or 45.
1. With engine cold, disconnect exhaust valve port hose from switching valve. Start engine and check for air flow from switching valve exhaust port.
2. If there is no air flow, proceed as follows:
a. Check for vacuum to divert and switching valves. If there is vacuum, proceed to step 2b. If there is no vacuum, check for vacuum leak or restriction in vacuum hose and repair or replace as necessary.
b. Check for air flow in air pump delivery hose. If there is air flow, proceed to step 3c. If there is no air flow, air pump is malfunctioning and must be repaired or replaced.
3. If there is air flow, proceed as follows:
a. Run engine until normal operating temperature is reached. Remove converter hose from switching valve and check for air flow from converter port. If air flow is present, proceed to step 3b. If there is no air flow, proceed to step 3c.
b. Remove air diverter hose from air cleaner. Check for air flow from diverter valve port as engine speed is rapidly accelerated, then decelerated. If air flow is present, air management system is functioning properly. If there is no air flow, proceed to step 3e.
c. Stop engine, turn ignition on and enter Code .9.6. Disconnect air switching valve electrical connector and connect test lamp between connector pins. If test lamp does not light, proceed to step 3d. If test lamp lights steady, proceed to step 3e. If test lamp flashes in three second intervals, proceed to step 3f.
d. Check condition of 10 amp IGN fuse. If fuse is blown, repair short to ground in circuit 639 and replace fuse. If fuse is satisfactory, check circuits 436 and 639 for an open. If circuits are satisfactory, measure resistance across air switching solenoid in both directions. If both readings are less than 20 ohms, replace solenoid and ECM. If either reading is greater than 20 ohms, check for a faulty ECM or ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary.
e. Check circuit 436 for a short to ground. If circuit is satisfactory, check for faulty ECM or ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary.
f. Stop engine, turn ignition on and enter Code .9.6. Disconnect air divert valve electrical connector and connect test lamp between connector pins. If test lamp flashes in three second intervals, replace air valve. If test lamp lights steady, check circuit 429 for a short to ground. If circuit is satisfactory, check for a faulty ECM or ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary. If test lamp does not light, check circuits 429 and 639 for an open. If circuits are satisfactory, measure resistance across air divert solenoid in both directions. If both readings are less than 20 ohms, replace solenoid and ECM. If either reading is greater than 20 ohms, check for a faulty ECM or ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary.
