Timing Cover: Service and Repair




Tool Required:
J-23523 Harmonic Balancer Remover
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery ground cable
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. M.A.P. sensor and EGR solenoid
4. Coolant recovery tank
5. Serpentine belt adjusting pulley
6. Generator and disconnect electrical wires
7. P/S pump bracket
8. Heater coolant pipe at P/S bracket
9. Raise car
10. Inner splash shield
11. A/C compressor bolt, if equipped
12. Flywheel cover at transaxle
13. Harmonic balancer with tool J-23523-1
14. Serpentine belt idler pulley
15. Pan-to-Timing Cover bolts
16. Lower cover bolts
17. Lower car.
18. Radiator hose at the water pump
19. Heater coolant hose at cooling system fill pipe
20. Bypass and overflow hoses
21. Canister purge hose
22. Upper Timing Cover bolts
23. Timing Cover

CLEAN
^ Sealing surfaces on the Timing Cover and cylinder block
^ Sealing surfaces with degreaser

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket making sure not to damage sealing surfaces
2. Apply a continuous 3mm (1/8 in.) bead of GM 1052917 RTV sealer or equivalent to oil pan sealing surface of Timing Cover.
3. Place Timing Cover on the engine, install upper cover bolts.
4. Raise car
5. Oil pan-to-cover screws
6. Lower cover bolts
7. Serpentine belt idler pulley
8. Harmonic balancer as previously outlined
9. Flywheel cover on transaxle
10. A/C compressor bolt, if equipped
11. Inner splash shield
12. Lower car.
13. Radiator hose at water pump
14. Heater hose at cooling system fill pipe
15. Bypass and overflow hoses
16. Canister purge hose
17. Heater coolant pipe at P/S bracket
18. P/S pump bracket
19. Generator and reconnect electrical wires
20. Serpentine belt adjusting pulley
21. Coolant recovery tank
22. M.A.P. sensor and EGR solenoid
23. Fill cooling system, leave radiator cap off.
24. Battery ground cable and start engine
25. Run engine until upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open.)
26. Check coolant level and add as necessary.
27. Install cooling system pressure cap, making sure arrows on cap line up with overflow tube.

ADJUST
^ Accessory belts

INSPECT
^ Coolant level
^ Leaks
