Rack and Pinion Assembly
REMOVE AND INSTALL POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY
Remove And Install Power Rack And Pinion Assembly:
REMOVE
1. Remove driver's side sound insulator.
2. From under Instrument Panel (I/P), pull the seal assembly down from the steering column and remove the upper pinch bolt from the flexible coupling.
3. Remove air cleaner and remove windshield washer jar attaching screws. Set washer jar aside.
4. Disconnect pressure pipe from steering gear and remove screw securing pressure line bracket to cowl. Move pressure hose aside.
5. Raise car.
6. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
7. Disconnect both tie rods from the struts using J 24319-01.
8. Lower car.
9. Remove R.H. mounting clamp. Tie rod may have to be moved up for clearance to remove clamp.
10. Remove L.H. mounting clamp.
11. Move gear assembly forward slightly and disconnect return pipe from gear. Drain fluid.
12. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the flexible coupling, then separate the coupling from the rack assembly.
13. Remove dash seal from rack assembly.
14. Raise car.
15. Remove splash shield from left inner fender.
16. Turn left knuckle and hub assembly to the full left turn position, rotate the stub shaft toward the front of the car, raise the right end of the rack and remove rack and pinion assembly through the access hole in the left inner fender.
INSTALL
^ If studs backed out during mounting clamp removal, it will be necessary to reinstall them before positioning gear assembly back into the car. Double nut the stud so that the stud can be torqued to 20 Nm 115 ft. lbs.) max.
1. Install the rack and pinion assembly through the access hole in the left inner fender.
2. Install splash shield on left inner fender.
3. Place the rack assembly into position and install the return pipe. Torque fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
4. Install dash seal onto rack assembly.
5. Use a screwdriver to slightly spread the clamp areas of the flexible coupling.
6. Have a helper inside the car guide the flexible coupling onto the stub shaft and onto the steering column. Install both pinch bolts and torque to:
^ Coupling to stub shaft 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Coupling to column 41 Nm 130 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the L.H. mounting clamp. Do not tighten.
8. Install the R.H. mounting clamp.
9. Tighten both mounting clamps. Torque nuts to 38 Nm (128 ft. lbs.).
10. Connect pressure pipe to gear and torque fitting to 27 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
11. Connect tie rods to Struts. Torque to specification.
12. Install front wheel and tire assemblies.
13. Lower car.
14. Install air cleaner and washer jar.
15. Install l.P. sound insulator.
16. Add power steering fluid and bleed system.
17. Check toe setting. Adjust as required.
