General System Description

Theft Deterrent System Operational Flow Chart:

The Electronic Theft Deterrent System has been designed to protect the contents of the passenger compartment and the trunk. It also offers an extra degree of protection to the vehicle itself whenever the system is armed. This extra protection is in the form of a starter interrupt relay which prevents the vehicle from starting whenever the system is in the alarm mode.

The operation of the system is controlled by the control module. When triggered, the control module will sound the vehicles horns and flash the low beam headlights, parking, tall, license and side marker lamps at a rate of 50 cycles per minute. At the same time the starter interrupt relay is energized if an attempt is made to start the car. The alarm will cycle for three to seven minutes and then shut down in order to prevent the battery from becoming discharged. When the system shuts down it automatically rearms itself and also maintains the operation of the starter interrupt relay until the system is properly disarmed.

SYSTEM OPERATION

The theft deterrent control module is operated in three stages; first is the "armed" stage, second is the "alarm" stage, and third is the "disarmed" stage. A security system indicator light is included in the telltale panel to indicate the mode that the control module is in. After the ignition is turned off, the "Security System" lamp will begin to flash when any door is opened. Activating the electric door lock switch to "LOCK" will cause the indicator lamp to illuminate continuously. The lamp will go out three seconds after the last door is closed to indicate the system is armed. When the system is armed, the trunk may be entered without triggering the alarm by unlocking the trunk with a key.

The system is disarmed by unlocking either front door with the key. Alarm shut down is accomplished only by unlocking either door with the key.

If the driver wants to prevent arming the system after using the "Door Lock" rocker switch, the switch can be moved to the unlock position before closing all doors. He may also cancel the arming process by rotating the ignition switch to the "ON" position before opening or closing any door, then back to lock. Rotating the ignition switch will not cancel the alarm once it is activated.

The doors may be locked mechanically using the lock rocker switch or door key without arming the system. The door key will disarm and deactivate the system. The ignition key in the ignition lock can only disarm the system, (before the alarm is activated), if a door has not been opened.

The alarm will be triggered if any of the doors or the trunk lid are opened without first unlocking them with a key. It can also be triggered by someone sitting on the driver's seat prior to unlocking either of the front doors.

Once the alarm has been activated, the starter interrupt relay will be energized each time an attempt is made to start the engine, and the alarm will continue to operate for a period of three to seven minutes. At the end of the time out period, the alarm will automatically shut off to conserve battery power and, if the locks have not been damaged, the system will rearm itself. However, once the system has been activated, the starter interrupt relay will re-energize each time an attempt is made to start the engine until the proper disarming sequence is initiated.

If a lock has been damaged, the "Security System" light flashes to alert the driver that the system has been activated. The light will not flash with the ignition on, but will continue to flash when the ignition is off. If the light is flashing with the ignition off and if the vehicle will not start, the vehicle should le inspected for theft or lock damage. In order to prevent the system from being disarmed without the use of a key, the lock cylinders are equipped with tamper switches. Any forced movement other than normal operation will be sensed by these switches.
