SUBJECT: STEERING KNUCKLE SERVICE PARTS AND PROCEDURES
MODELS AFFECTED: 1985-1988 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS
Steering knuckles for 1985-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods (except 1986 models with Anti-Lock Brakes) are being serviced with 1989 steering knuckles. When installing these parts, it will be necessary to replace the hub/bearing seal and drive axle deflector ring. On 1987-1988 cars equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes the wheel speed sensor will also require replacement. On 1986 cars with Anti-Lock Brakes the wheel speed sensor is not compatible with the new knuckle and the new wheel speed sensor is not compatible with the 1986 Anti-Lock Brake System. Therefore, on this model it is necessary to replace the knuckle with the original style knuckle, seal, and deflector ring. Refer to the chart on the following page for proper part numbers and applications.
Installation of the hub/bearing seal on the new steering knuckle differs from prior years. As shown in Figure 1, the seal is installed from the outboard side of the steering knuckle. Fill the cavity between the hub/bearing seal and bearing with grease. Refer to the 1989 DeVille/Fleetwood Service Information manual, Section 3C, for complete removal and installation procedures.
