Console Shift Control - Will Not Disengage From PARK

SUBJECT: CONSOLE SHIFT CONTROL WILL NOT DISENGAGE FROM "PARK" POSITION

MODELS AFFECTED: 1986 ELDORADO AND SEVILLE

Some 1986 Eldorado and Seville models may experience a condition which prevents the transmission from being disengaged from "Park".

To correct this condition, the following procedure should be followed:

FIGURE 1 - Shifter Handle Assembly:

1. Remove shifter handle by removing the handle retaining clip (Figure 1, Items 1 and 2) and pulling the handle upward.

2. Remove the park lock detent rod (Figure 1, Item 3) and insert a new detent rod P/N 1643023 in the shift control (Figure 1, Item 4).

3. With the shifter in the "Park" position, install the height gauge (included with Bulletin) over the new detent rod and cut the rod off flush with the top of the gauge.

4. Using a fine grit sandpaper or emery cloth, dress the cut end until it is square and smooth, removing any ridge lines resulting from the cutting operation.

NOTE: Top of rod must be cut squarely and be free from burrs and/or taper. Each rod must be sized to the specific shift control in which it is used. Do not size the rod before it is needed.

5. Clean any debris found on the rod or in the control tube and lubricate the detent rod using a white non-corrosive lubricant and install the rod in the control tube.

6. Replace the handle assembly with the appropriate part number listed on the attached chart (Figure 2).
