SUBJECT: ENGINE STOPS RUNNING DUE TO TCC ENGAGEMENT WHEN SHIFTED FROM PARK/NEUTRAL TO REVERSE OR DRIVE - THM 200-4R
MODELS AFFECTED: 81-84 - DE VILLE & BROUGHAM ("C"-"D"-RWD) 85-86 - FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM ("D" RWD)
Figure 1 - Pump Assembly:
Some 1981 through the current production model year vehicles using THM 200-4R transmissions may experience a condition where the engine stops running, or lugs, when shifted from Park/Neutral to Reverse or Drive. This condition may result from torque converter clutch engagement when either gear range is selected, and may be caused by improper operation of the converter clutch valve, located in the pump cover (Refer to Figure t).
IMPORTANT: Prior to servicing the pump assembly for the above condition, make certain that the engine is properly tuned to specifications.
If this condition exists, inspect the pump assembly as follows:

Figure 2 - Retaining Ring:
^ Check for an improperly seated or missing retaining ring (Figure 1, Item 225). Verify that the retaining ring is installed with the rounded edge of the ring facing the valve stop (item 226). Refer to Figure 2.
^ Verify that converter clutch valve (item 227) and valve bore are free of nicks or burrs.
^ Check for missing, broken or damaged converter clutch valve springs (outer spring item 228 and inner spring item 229).
^ Verify that the retaining ring groove is not too shallow for the ring to seat, preventing adequate retention.
Refer to the appropriate Service Information Manual for removal and installation procedures.
